People shocked at 'outrageous' price for four drinks at Dublin's Temple Bar

A pub in Dublin's Temple Bar has been called out for charging 'outrageous' prices after a round of drinks came to an eye-watering bill.

This might not be all that surprising considering the pub is located in a tourist hotspot in a popular city, but it was enough for a local politician to call it out.

Councillor Jim Gildea took to Facebook a few days ago (2 April) to share a picture of a receipt from Oliver St. John Gogartys pub where a group bought a couple of pints of Guinness, a pint of Kilkenny, a vodka and a Red Bull.

The Guinness was €9.95 (£8.53) a pint while the Kilkenny would set you back €10.95 (£9.39).

Meanwhile, assuming the vodka and Red Bull was meant to be combined into a drink for one person that'd cost €16.85 (£14.45) which all adds up to a hefty bill for people wanting to get a round of drinks in at three in the afternoon.

"When canvassing last evening I was handed this by a constituent," the politician said when he shared a picture of the receipt.

"This purchase was at 3pm, I’d hate to see what the cost would be at 1:30am

Not good for our tourist industry. Not good for us."

A number of people commented on his post, with some calling the prices a 'rip off'.

"Glad my social days are behind me," one person commented, and someone else said he had a similar experience years ago and 'never went back'.

Sadly the price of a pint appears to be climbing ever upwards as costs pile up, making going to the pub an increasingly expensive activity.

Later on, Gildea told Dublin Live he was worried about what high prices would do to the city's tourist industry.

He said: "It's outrageous. I'm really, really concerned at what this does for the tourist industry. Temple Bar is renowned for being the heart of Dublin.

"Nearly €17 for a vodka and red bull, €11 for a pint of ale. I am shocked at it.

"I was having a friendly chat with a constituent talking about pricing when they said - wait a minute, look at this - you can see the date, you can see the time so you can see it's recent. I hope there's a public response to this.

"And a lot of pubs in Temple Bar or town, not necessarily this one, increase their prices at night as well."
