Forrest Gump isn’t Tom Hanks’ most successful movie

If you’re a bit of a film fanatic, there’s a great chance you’ll have seen - and enjoyed - Tom Hanks’ performance in Forrest Gump, but did you know that it’s not his most successful film ever?

It goes without saying that Tom Hanks has made a s**t load of films, most of which have been hugely successful.

He’s been in big blockbusters like Cast Away, massive war movies like Saving Private Ryan, and family favourites like Toy Story.

Over the course of his career, he’s also won two Academy Awards for Best Actor - consecutively, as it happens - for his role in Philadelphia and then the following year in Forrest Gump.

But, while he’s achieved critical acclaim for those roles - as well as in things like The Green Mile - his biggest grossing film to date isn’t necessarily one of the best known ones.

It is - drum roll - Toy Story 4.

Yes, it seems quite obvious, but only once you know the answer.

In the pantheon of huge productions that Hanks has been in, there haven’t been many that have been taken to the hearts of the masses like the Toy Story franchise.

It all started back in 1995 when Hanks and Tim Allen starred alongside one another in the roles of Sheriff Woody and Buzz Lightyear respectively, and it continued on until 2019, when Toy Story 4 rounded out the series - to date, anyway - with an all-star cast.

Despite not being the most famous film in the franchise for most of the fans who were there from the start, the movie became the highest grossing of the whole lot, taking in $1.073 billion around the globe.

It marginally pipped Toy Story 3 to the top spot in the series, and it is still Hanks’ best selling film.

In terms of live action stuff, Forrest Gump doesn’t even top the list for that.

According to IMDb - who know about these sorts of things - the highest grossing live-action movie for Hanks is The Da Vinci Code.

It makes sense, the book was one of the biggest sellers in the world, and in 2006 it was brought to the big screen, starring Hanks as American professor Robert Langdon, alongside co-stars Audrey Tautou, Jean Reno, and Ian McKellen.

Ron Howard’s epic thriller made $758 million at the box office, whereas Forrest Gump made $677 million, according to the same stats.

In third place was the sequel to The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, at $486 million.

Then, it’s Saving Private Ryan ($482 million) and Cast Away ($430 million) to round out the top five.

They’re all massive films, and all performed well at the box office, but not as well as the Toy Story flicks.
