The New Nintendo Labo Has Completely Changed The Game

As games console manufacturers go, Nintendo has always been sort of like a mad uncle. While Sony and Microsoft have gone to war over the living room computer market with the various Xbox and PlayStation machines, Nintendo has made smaller, quirkier products that don't really fit in with the norm.

The Wii showed that video games could also keep people active, and the 3DS brought the world portable 3D gaming without the need for silly glasses.

Their latest model, the Nintendo Switch has tried to shorten the distance between portable and home gaming systems and it has been remarkably popular in doing so.

Never ones to stand still, they are trying to bring more and more features to the Switch - they are in discussion with companies like Netflix - and they have just announced one of the most exciting ideas in recent gaming history.

They are calling it the Nintendo Labo, and it looks basically like the best thing ever. You can buy cardboard kits that fold into things like a piano, a fishing rod, or a robot backpack, and then fit your Nintendo Switch into them to play with it.

Seriously, they look amazing - and not even just for kids. They work by incorporating the console's Joy-Con controllers into the cardboard structure - let's say, a motorbike - and then you use the cardboard motorbike to play a load of mini-games, like a miniature arcade game.

You can get your hands on it from 27 April this year in the UK (one week after the US).

There are two kits to start with, the 'Variety Kit' for about £60 ($69) which has stuff like a remote controlled car, a fishing rod, and a piano, and the 'Robot Kit' which can be bought separately for about £70 ($79).

If you can't wait that long, there is a Nintendo Labo Workshop event in London between 14-17 February that you can apply for tickets for. You must apply before 1 February and you HAVE to be accompanied by a child.

The company said: "We're bringing kids, parents, media and influencers together to make, play and discover with Nintendo Labo. Space is limited, so if you're interested, please sign up for the chance to attend!"

So if you want to go, you'll have to have a kid, or a younger sibling, or a friend with a kid along with you. It'll be worth the tears and tantrums though, because this looks amazing.
