Official FIFA World Cup account deletes tweet saying Lionel Messi is the GOAT after copping backlash

Football's governing body posted and then deleted a tweet appearing to mock Cristiano Ronaldo after Argentina's World Cup win.

FIFA have found themselves in a rather awkward situation after a few rogue tweets appeared to poke fun at legendary Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo after Argentina's epic World Cup win.

Ronaldo and Argentina’s star forward Lionel Messi are broadly considered to be two of the best football players in the world.

And now it seems FIFA have picked their favourite.

Which, to be honest, is never a good look for the governing body of the sport around the globe.

The posts in question certainty didn’t mince words about FIFA’s seemingly preferred player.

The first tweet said: "The [Greatest Of All Time] GOAT debate is settled. The ultimate prize is now part of the collection."

Eek.

But wait. It does get worse.

Another tweet appeared to mock Ronaldo, with the World Cup account posting a pic of the legendary player from Portugal giving fans a big thumbs up.

The caption was the killer though.

It read: "Thumbs up if you really enjoyed the #FIFAWorldCup.”

Awkward for Ronaldo.

The posts have since been deleted, but that didn't stop fans from roasting the posts from the global governing body.

Some supporters on social media were less enthused by the post, however.

One Ronaldo fan wrote: "FIFA deleted this tweet after getting called out for being biased and receiving backlash. A professional account of the biggest football organisation in the world. It has always been Ronaldo vs the rigged system."

Another social media took a pretty big swipe at those behind the global tournament: ""FIFA deleted this tweet. We know they rigged it all for Messi to win but still can’t flex."

Another wrote: "FIFA deleted [the] tweet? From day one, we knew y'all never liked [Ronaldo]. Ronaldo had to achieve everything he had the hard way. FIFA is not deceiving anybody."

Yikes.
