Newcastle fans praised for leaving Trafalgar Square ‘spotless’ after Carabao Cup final takeover

Newcastle fans praised for leaving Trafalgar Square ‘spotless’ after Carabao Cup final takeover

Newcastle United meet Manchester United in Sunday's Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Trafalgar Square was taken over by thousands of Newcastle United fans ahead of the club's almighty showdown in Sunday's Carabao Cup final. Check it out:

There's a big reason to celebrate, as The Magpies are set to play their first major cup final in nearly 25 years at the Wembley Stadium today (26 February).

On Saturday, just one day ahead of the big game, a massive crowd of supporters - many wearing the famous black and white striped shirts - were seen chanting and having a good time as they descended on the London hotspot.

Others enjoyed a few bevvies, while a few let off smoke bombs in the team's black and white colours.

The Carabao Cup final takes place this afternoon, with a 4.30pm kick-off that will see Manchester United line up against Newcastle.

As said, it's the first final for The Toon since the 1999 FA Cup, where they also went up against The Red Devils - although they came out second best with a 2-0 loss.

The fans were in good spirits ahead of the game.

Whether they'll enjoy victory this time round is yet to be seen. But, either way, the fans were seen in good spirits yesterday as they gathered around Nelson's Column while the sun set in the city.

That includes Newcastle's co-owners Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Jamie Reuben, with the former sharing a picture of the pair at the square on Twitter alongside the caption: "Toon army."

Earlier on in the day, Ghodoussi wrote: "To all our away fans who have traveled to London, let’s turn Wembley into St James’ tomorrow.

"Sing your hearts out and wave those scarfs. We are the 12th man on that pitch."

Hundreds of people have commented on the now-viral clip shared by Barstool Football, with one fan writing: "They better win tomorrow."

"Scenes, begging Newcastle beat United for the sake of all of us," said another, while a third added, "Not called the Toon ARMY for nothing."

A fourth chimed in: "Haha love it. Really hope they win it tomorrow. We are all Newcastle tomorrow."

The fans have been praised and not just amongst themselves, as they even cleaned up after their celebrations.

One shared photos of the efforts alongside the caption: "'If you’re proud to be a Geordie…' #NUFC

@NUFC Trafalgar Square left just as we found it."

Of course, there were plenty of Manchester fans getting in on the action too.

"Be a quiet journey back for them when they get pumped tomorrow," quipped one.

A second claimed: "Wonder where they got that idea from. Always copying us. Saw how good ours was so they did it."

"Let them have it for today, we will take over tomorrow," added a third, with a fourth writing, "All this to get battered."

One thing's for sure: the stakes are very high. Let the games begin.
