Manchester United's Mason Greenwood arrested for ‘breaching bail conditions’

Manchester United's Mason Greenwood arrested for ‘breaching bail conditions’

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has allegedly been arrested for breaching bail conditions

Mason Greenwood has been arrested at his Manchester home this morning for allegedly breaching his bail conditions.

The 21-year-old footballer was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault in January of this year, and has also been questioned over claims that he threatened to kill a woman.

The England international and Manchester United footballer has not yet been charged and had his bail extended this June.

In a statement which did not confirm the name of the arrest, but confirmed an address, Greater Manchester Police said: “Greater Manchester Police are aware of an allegation regarding a 21-year-old man breaching his bail conditions and an arrest has been made on Saturday 15 October 2022.

“Enquiries are ongoing at this time.”

Immediately after his arrest in January, Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United until further notice, and was also removed from the latest FIFA video game at the time.

He was also dropped by his sponsor Nike.

In March, United released their latest statement on the young forward’s position at the club, confirming that nothing had changed after fans noticed that Greenwood remained as a member of the Red Devils’ first team squad on their website.

That statement read: "There has been no change whatsoever in Mason’s status.

"This was in order to remove Mason from interactive elements of the app, such as team predictions etc.

"However, his profile was never removed from the website as he remains a Manchester United player, albeit not currently part of the squad while the legal process unfolds."

After his arrest, United also moved to get rid of all Greenwood’s merchandise from the club shop, informing fans who had purchased shirts bearing his name and number that they could request a free exchange.

They told fans: "As a United Direct customer we are writing to you regarding your previous purchase of a Manchester United shirt personalised with Greenwood, given the current circumstances relating to Mason Greenwood.

"We can confirm that United Direct and adidas customers who purchased a Manchester United shirt that was personalised with Greenwood's name and number, have the opportunity to exchange it for this season's home shirt personalised with another player's name without charge."

In the immediate aftermath of the alleged incident, Nike said: "We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation."

However, they later added: "Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete.”

Enquiries are ongoing, and Greenwood has yet to be charged.
