More Than £6,000 Raised For Football Fan Who Sent 26p To Favourite Player

More Than £6,000 Raised For Football Fan Who Sent 26p To Favourite Player

The six-year-old's heart-warming letter went viral and now the club is trying to track down the young fan

A fundraiser for a young football fan who sent 26p to his favourite player has raised more than £6,000.

Swindon Town FC shared a heart-warming letter it had received from a six-year-old fan called Joe, who said he couldn't afford to go to a game because his mum 'has no money for food'.

But despite the seeming lack of funds in the home, Joe attached 26p to the letter for his favourite player, Harry McKirdy.

The letter read: "Mummy doesn't have any money to come to Swindon games because she has no money for food and has to pay for my dinner at school.

"I like Swindon Town Harry McKirdy. I will come one day.

"Joe Aged 6 ½."

The letter went viral, amassing more than 16,000 likes on Twitter, and League Two club Swindon said they would 'love to get in touch with Joe' if anyone could point them in the right direction.

The letter was shared on Tuesday (15 February) and Joe still hasn't been tracked down; however, a fundraiser set up to get him and his family to a game has raised £6,892 ($9,359) at the time of writing.

The fundraiser reads: "Swindon Town FC have been contacted by a young boy called Joe who unfortunately doesn't have the privileges of being able to attend football matches!

"This is where football comes together. Let's all get together and fund for Joe & his family to attend a game & for Joe to be mascot for the day giving him an experience for life!"

And it seems football has come together, with fans from all over pitching in.

One wrote: "Best wishes from a Norwich City fan in Ireland. Hopefully Joe and his Mum will be found and a great day will be had. Proper football community support around the world. Enjoy the day young man! #OTBC"

Another added: "I would pay for two tickets to go with his Mum or Dad - what a fantastic lad.

"Mum may not have much money - but what a fantastic job she has done with her son."

After the donations flooded in, the man who started the fundraiser provided an update.

He wrote: "WOW. Blown away by everyone's support.

"Have been in touch with the club and they are overwhelmed too."

Here's hoping the letter is what it seems and they can track down Joe.
