World Record Egg responds after losing most liked picture to Lionel Messi

World Record Egg responds after losing most liked picture to Lionel Messi

The World Record Egg was overtaken by a photo of Lionel Messi holding the World Cup after Argentina's win against France in Qatar

The world record breaking egg – yes, the one who was previously the most liked photo on Instagram – has responded after that accolade was taken by Lionel Messi.

Messi’s picture of him holding up the World Cup after Argentina’s win against France in Qatar overtook the egg as the most liked photograph of all time, and now the people behind the account have spoken out.

They said: “4 years ago we set out on a mission. 9 days later we made internet history. Together.

“Today [Lionel Messi] has taken the crown, for now. But I’m still left with one question…

“Who is the greatest of all time – Cristiano Ronaldo or Leo Messi?”

In case your memory needs refreshing, the record-breaking egg found fame back in 2019 when it managed to become the most-liked Instagram picture in history.

This was a record previously held by Kylie Jenner, and as you can imagine, the egg was quite pleased with themselves, but alas, it's all over after an almost-four-year run.

As you can imagine, Messi's victory over the egg's record has become a talking point on social media too.

While some social media users have taken to the egg's Instagram to mock the loss, with countless 'Messi' comments being left below the image, others have been making memes.

One meme saw Messi bursting out of an egg with the World Cup trophy.

Another meme featured the footballer posing at the egg's grave.

While a third saw the footballer making a face in front of a row of eggs on a bench.

News of Messi taking the record has also been verified by Guinness World Records, who confirmed the new record in a post.

The organisation wrote at the time of its announcement: "Lionel Messi has become the most liked post on Instagram, with over 58 million likes (and counting!)

@world_record_egg was the previous record holder of this title, with 55.7 million likes when last verified by Guinness World Records."

This will undoubtedly be the cherry on top of an amazing moment for Messi, who, at 35, said it was the last chance he was going to have to win the World Cup before retiring.
