The London Resort is 'going ahead, as planned', despite several delays holding up the process - with construction set to begin next year.

The £3.5 billion project, dubbed the 'UK Disneyland', was first announced back in 2012, promising to be one of the 'largest construction projects across Europe' and billed as the biggest theme park on the continent to be built from the ground up since Disneyland Paris in 1992

The 535-acre site will be built on the Swanscombe Peninsula near Dartford in Kent, with the first phase due to open to the public in 2024, followed by a second park sometime in 2029.

According to the London Resort's website, building work will commence from 2022, when the planning application for the project is expected to be accepted.

"Provided our DCO application is granted, works will start in 2022, with a view to the London Resort opening in 2024," it says.

PY Gerbeau, CEO of London Resort Company Holdings (LRCH), gave an update on the project at the Blooloop V-Expo recently, where three British firms were unveiled as the first businesses chosen by the theme park to help bring the concept to life.

Confirming that things remain on track, Gerbeau said: "To all the naysayers and doom-mongers, the London Resort is going ahead, as planned.

"To all businesses who believe they can play a part in creating a world of unique experiences, I encourage you to go to our website now, register your details and together we will create our footnote in history."

Electrosonic, Garmendale and Katapult were all confirmed as participating businesses, with 65 others told they were also in the running.

However, Gerbeau stressed that the door is still open for more businesses to register.

"It is a day to celebrate British innovation and technological wizardry," he continued.

"Electrosonic, Katapult and Garmendale are all leaders in their fields and together we are on a journey to create our own slice of history by building the UK's first next generation theme park. But turning our vision into reality will be complicated.

"We will be the first theme park across Europe, to be built from scratch in nearly 30 years. We will be one of the only operationally carbon neutral parks in the world. And with our investment in sustainability and the environment, we will be beacon of what can be achieved when the environment, commerce and entertainment flourish together, hand in hand.

"To make that vision a reality, we will only work with the best of the best that industry has to offer and today marks the first day of that exciting journey ahead."
