Millions of Facebook users suffered from the dreaded chirp

If you’ve been mindlessly scrolling on Facebook today and have noticed a weird chirping sound, you’re not the only one.

Millions of users were shocked to find out the social media platform had suddenly began to make a weird little sound, similar to that of a high pitched squeaking, when flicking through the news feed.

Many have even gone to ask Facebook how they can shut it up as it drove them mad.

If you’re one of the lucky ducks who didn’t notice the bizarre sound, one man took to X to share exactly how painstaking the noise can be if you’re browsing your feed.

User Eray Eliaçık posted the clip online and I’ve got to say, if I had heard that sound on my phone this morning before the chance of having a cup of coffee, I’d have thrown it in the bin.

Andy Stone of Meta cleared up the annoying little glitch on a post to X, typing: "Hearing a chirping noise while scrolling through your Facebook Feed on your iPhone? It’s not you, it’s us!

"And it’s an unfortunate technical error that we're in the process of fixing."

Curious? Take a listen:

But one disgruntled user replied to him: “It shouldn’t take that long to fix. Hurry up it’s annoying.”

Someone else posted a plea for help: “My Facebook is making a weird chirping sound while I scroll and I tried restarting my phone and it didn’t work. What do I do now?”

Another wrote: “Tf is my Facebook chirping for.”

Others took directly to the platform to demand it be fixed with one writing: “Hey Facebook! Get rid of that annoying chirping sound!”

But fear not, there’s a simple way to get rid of it.

Thankfully, KTLA Morning News reported a way to turn it off.

They suggested the following steps on your phone: Facebook App > Menu > Settings and Privacy > Settings > Media > In-App Sounds (turn off).

Did you manage to get the noise to stop?

In a post by LADbible sharing tips to switch the chirp off, users were quick to share their annoyance over the sound and the app’s technical issue.

One wrote: “My phone is always silent. Still had to tolerate the annoying chirping today," while another joked: “Gonna have to ring in work on the sick it’s affected me so much.”

Someone else had to experience it second-hand: “Didn't happen on my Android but it did on my wife's iPhone. It was driving her nuts. She figured it out last night on her own.”

However, if you follow the tip above, hopefully you’ll be able to live a chirp-free life soon enough.

LADbible has contacted Meta for comment.
