Mysterious red triangle on road signs has left people completely baffled

The unusual road marking led to a variety of theories

A rarely seen road sign marking has left Brits scrambling to figure out what it means.

Reddit user, Travisparagus, headed to the CasualUK forum to try and figure out what the unusual road marking meant.

Writing in a post, Travisparagus said: "This red right angled triangle appears on two road signs in West Sussex, about 3 miles apart. On the green sign it's oriented differently from on the white sign.

The sign has left Redditors confused.

"I've checked the highway code, and even downloaded a book called 'Know Your Traffic Signs' by the Department of Transport, but I can find no mention of what it means. I've never seen it on any other sign in the area, or anywhere else.

"What does it mean?"

Accompanying the post were two photos taken in West Sussex, showing signs that had a red triangle placed upon them.

Reddit Users from across the UK weighed in to share their thoughts and theories - some more credible than others.

The highest rated response came from RefreshinglyDull, who wrote: "Direction/guide markers. Usually for runners or cyclists racing. Occasionally they're crew directions to an event or filming location.

"Discreet enough that no one will notice, but there if you need them.

"More formal diversion markers are properly signed, like black diamonds or squares on yellow backgrounds."

Other Reddit users decided to have fun speculating on the possible meanings of the triangle markings.

One user joked: "Entry requirement (via a toll booth): A wedge of Red Leicester," whilst another remarked: "It's the volume allowed at that location..."

The mysterious red triangle left Reddit users divided on it's meaning.

A fellow commenter wrote: "It tells you where there's an epic ramp you can drive over and do some sick stunts."

Somebody couldn't pass up the opportunity to poke fun at Sussex and wrote: "Anywhere near Forest Row and it's likely to be something weird. Direction to a vegan protest or Mormon barbecue."

Other Sussex locals shared their confusion with the triangle signs, as one remarked: "Jesus, that is literally up the road from me. I've asked this question before," drawing enthusiastic agreement from other residents.

This isn't the first time that a road sign has caused confusion among Brits, as one driving theory test expert even took the time to explain a common sign that had left drivers baffled.

The RAC (Royal Automobile Club) has been contacted for clarification on the sign's meaning.
