Her Majesty passed away on 8 September and after a period of mourning, she has now been laid to rest at the King George VI memorial chapel

Queen Elizabeth II has been laid to rest at the King George VI memorial chapel, in St George's Chapel.

The monarch passed away on 8 September, sending the nation - and people across the world - into a period of mourning.

After lying in state in Westminster Hall since Wednesday (14 September) - with people queuing for hours on end to pay their respects - the Queen has now been buried alongside her late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Queen married Prince Philip in 1947, and together they went on to welcome King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

The couple's grandchildren include Prince Harry, Prince William, Peter Phillips, Zara Tindall, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

Elizabeth II was Britain's longest-serving monarch, with a reign lasting 70 years, and earlier this year she was the first to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.

She is also the second-longest serving monarch in history, behind Louis XIV's reign of 72 years and 110 days, from 1643 to 1715 - though he only started to rule personally in his 20s, in 1661.

Her death meant son Charles became the new monarch, assuming the title King Charles III.

In the aftermath of her passing, the 73-year-old shared a brief statement, in which he said he would seek comfort in the knowledge the she was held in such high regard by so many across the globe.

He wrote: "The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

"We mourn profoundly the loss of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved Mother.

"I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

"During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held."
