Prince Harry and Prince Andrew wore morning suits at Queen's procession

Prince Harry and Prince Andrew wore morning suits at Queen's procession

There's a reason why Prince Harry and Prince Andrew wore morning suits rather than military uniforms at the Queen's procession.

Prince Harry and Prince Andrew were wearing morning suits rather than military uniforms for their roles in the Queen's coffin procession today.

Draped in the royal standard and bearing the Imperial State Crown, the Queen's coffin was taken through the streets of London on a gun carriage from The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

Thousands of mourners lined the streets of the UK's capital to pay their respects to the Queen as her body was carried to Westminster Hall, where the late Queen will lay in state until her funeral on 19 September.

Following behind the coffin was the new King Charles III and the rest of the royal family, with siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward and son Prince William wearing military uniforms.

Princes Harry and Andrew were instead dressed in morning suits, making them stand out from the rest of their immediate family, though they were still permitted to wear medals.

The reason behind this is because neither are working members of the royal family, and only working royals have permission to wear military uniforms during such events.

A spokesperson for Prince Harry had already confirmed he would be wearing a morning suit for his participation in the Queen's funeral events as per tradition.

This is despite him serving two tours with the British Army in Afghanistan, but he stepped back from working as a senior royal alongside wife Meghan Markle in 2020 as he moved to the US with his family.

Prince Andrew is allowed to wear military uniforms at the events, having been given permission to do so as 'a special mark of respect' for his mother.

The Duke of York withdrew from public duties following a scandal over his involvement with convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

He also faced accusations from Virginia Giuffre that he had sexually abused and raped her on three separate occasions when she was 17.

Andrew denied the accusations, which were later settled out of court when he paid £12 million.

For many, the march of the royals behind the Queen's coffin echoes the moment Harry and William walked side by side behind Princess Diana's coffin 25 years ago.

The gun carriage used to bring the Queen's coffin through the streets of London saw service in both World Wars, and was also used to carry the late monarch's parents during their funerals.

The Queen's coffin has now been placed in Westminster Hall ahead of her funeral, and due to the weight of the casket it requires eight pallbearers to carry it.

This is due to the fact that her body is going to be interred within the King George VI Memorial Vault rather than given a traditional burial.
