PlayStation announces new handheld gaming console called Project Q

Project Q is the latest handheld streaming device allowing you to play all your favourite PlayStation 5 games.

PlayStation has unveiled its new gaming console 'Project Q'.

Looks like we've got a little PlayStation innovation on our hands here...literally.

Project Q is PlayStation's latest handheld streaming device, which allows you to play all of your favourite PlayStation 5 games.

To give you an idea of what this new baby looks like and how it functions, it's almost like a cross between a Nintendo Switch and a DualSense controller.

The device features a large tablet-like screen bound by two halves of a DualSense remote, meaning you can enjoy all the capabilities of a DualSense controller on the go.

But to play anything on this new handheld, you must download what you want to play to your PS5 first, and then your console streams your downloaded games to the device via Wi-Fi.

Sony boss Jim Ryan said of the new device: “Innovation is our passion, and that applies to not just what games you play, but how you play them. Later this year we will launch a device that enables you to stream any game from your PS5 over Wi-Fi.

"Internally known as Project Q, it has an eight-inch HD screen and all of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller.

"We look forward to sharing more information in the near future."

However, during the gaming console's showcase, Ryan said that Sony would have more to share about Project Q in 'the near future', and the device is scheduled to launch later this year.

PlayStation took to Twitter to show a sneak peek of Project Q, with many gamers wagging their tails, as one person wrote: "I will be pre-ordering this day one."

Another said: "I'm so wanting these accessories! #ProjectQ."

While a third commented: "I HAVE to mention Project Q and the new earbuds. We've been screaming for a new PlayStation handheld, and oh my god we are getting it!"

However, it was met with some criticism, as one wrote: "Let me get this straight. They're making a handheld gaming device, with the twist being that it requires being tethered to a PS5 and only lets you stream the games over Wi-Fi?"

While another said: "That’s gotta be the ugliest handheld device ever created. Whoever let that go to production should be fired."
