Plan For New Hooters Restaurant Divides Opinion Among Locals

Plan For New Hooters Restaurant Divides Opinion Among Locals

Hooters has applied to open a second restaurant in the UK, but not everyone is thrilled

If you live in the Greater Manchester area, perhaps you’ve heard that the popular American bar and restaurant chain Hooters is set to open a new venue in the area.

Famous for waiting staff that wear small shorts, the new Hooters restaurant will - if a licence is granted - be throwing open the doors at Salford Quays, and not everyone is so keen on the idea.

Of course, there are those who absolutely can’t wait, but others who believe the US-based chain is ‘degrading to women’ because of the ‘scantily clad’ waitresses.

The application that has been submitted to Salford City Council is for live music, recorded music, and performances of dance.

Should the licence be granted, the new Hooters will open from 9:00am until 01:00am every night of the week, much like counterparts across the pond.

It would become the second Hooters in the UK, with the first in Nottingham.

Plans to open a branch in Liverpool have already been the subject of a petition calling the chain ‘archaic and chauvinistic’.

The Manchester Evening News asked readers to give their opinions on what they think to the potential new addition to the nightlife in the area.

One person responded: “Stag do sorted”.

While a second said it was ‘about time’ there was a Hooters.

A third wrote: “It will do well.

“Been to a couple in America, and the Nottingham one several times and have always had a far nicer meal and massively better service than most UK restaurants.

“I've said for a while that one would do very well in the GM area.”

Others voiced their concerns about the famously inclement weather in Salford, with one suggesting: “I hope all the workers get treated nice and they don’t get too cold. They need to turn the heating up and put the kettle on and keep warm.”

One person responded: “Reinforcing toxic masculinity, misogynistic, chauvinistic and outdated views.

“It is demeaning and degrading to women and girls.”

A second said: “Council will never approve. Hopefully....”

A third commented: “How degrading for women having to wear such attire for work. This shouldn't be happening in the twenty-first century.”

Still, there’s work to be done on whether the restaurant will even get the go-ahead in the first place.

After all, there’s no guarantee they’ll be granted a licence by the council.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
