A fire-themed rollercoaster at Alton Towers has unexpectedly closed, with engineers rushing in to fix the problem. The Wicker Man only opened in March last year and is one of the most popular rides in the North Staffordshire theme park. Staff have confirmed that they are working to open it again 'as soon as possible'.
A spokesperson for Alton Towers Resort said: "Wicker Man is undergoing maintenance and is currently unavailable.

"We are working to open it as soon as possible.
"We apologise to our guests for any inconvenience caused."
The Wicker Man cost a jaw-dropping £16 million and fuses wood and fire to create a stunning set piece where the iconic Corkscrew used to sit. The ride itself uses video to tell a spooky story before shuttling thrill seekers at 44 mph through drops - including a double dip - two tunnels and three passes through the gigantic Wicker Man himself which bursts into flames.
The ride itself has been positively accepted by coaster fans, with it rating higher than the infamous Smiler, vertical stomach churner Oblivion and Nemesis.

There's no news so far on when the ride will open back up, but with the park set to close at 5pm, it's unlikely to be up and running before the gates close.
