Elon Musk Says Twitter’s Decision To Suspend Jordan Peterson Over A Comment About Elliot Page Was ‘Too Far’

Elon Musk reckons Twitter went 'too far' in axing Jordan Peterson's account after his controversial tweets about Elliot Page.

The author and psychologist tweeted about The Umbrella Academy star and used the actor's former name and referenced him having undergone top surgery on June 22.

For those that may not be aware, top surgery for transgender men and non-binary people is a procedure to remove breast or chest tissue. It's also called masculinising chest surgery.

His message was a reply to an article in which Page said he’s proud to introduce a transgender character to Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy.

Twitter then revoked Peterson's to his Twitter account on June 28 following the deadnaming incident.

Following the Twitter ban Peterson told The National Post that he would 'rather die' than just delete the post.

“I penned an irritated tweet in response to one of the latest happenings on the increasingly heated culture war front,” Peterson explained.

“There are no rules on Twitter except don’t do what we don’t like today.

"They are always applied post hoc by algorithms and idiots bent on maintaining their woke superiority.”

He also declined to apologise.

Well, now Elon Musk is chipping in with his two (billion) cents after being asked on Twitter for his thoughts.

Musk, who is in the process of buying the social media platform, fired straight back.

"Yeah, they're going way too far in squashing dissenting opinions," Musk wrote.

The tech billionaire waded into the debate after he posted a meme on the fourth of July that inferred Twitter inserts information warnings on posts that are contrary to what people are saying.

"The British are coming," the meme read alongside a picture of American Revolutionary patriot Paul Revere.

Underneath the fake meme-tweet by Revere there is a Twitter warning that reads: "Learn how British taxes are beneficial for society."

Musk has spoken out about free speech on Twitter on several occasions and has vowed to make Twitter a more open space for dialogue once his $44 billion purchase of the platform goes through.

"Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated," he said in May. 

Musk’s latest comments come shortly after a Los Angeles court gave his daughter the green light to change her name to Vivian Jenna Wilson in order to represent her gender transition and identity.

According to court findings obtained by TMZ, Wilson listed the reason for her name change as: "Gender Identity and the fact that I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form."
