Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland gets cleared of domestic violence charges

The co-creator of Rick and Morty, Justin Roiland, has had a domestic violence case against him dismissed.

It was revealed earlier this year that Roiland had been charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit.

The case hinged on a criminal complaint that was filed back in 2020.

The Orange County District Attorney brought on the case against the voice actor and TV show creator, who pleaded not guilty.

However, the District Attorney's office has now revealed they won't be pursuing the case anymore.

Office spokesperson Kimberly Edds said in a statement: "We dismissed the charges today as a result of having insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The move could have massive ramifications for Rick and Morty.

Adult Swim, who distributes the celebrated animated TV show, revealed they had parted ways with Roiland following the discovery of the domestic violence case.

The network said they would be pushing ahead with season seven of the show without Roiland and work was underway in finding another voice for the roles done by Roiland.

However, it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Roiland has released a statement since the district attorney announced the case wouldn't be proceeding.

"I have always known that these claims were false - and I never had any doubt that this day would come," he said.

"I'm thankful that this case has been dismissed but, at the same time, I'm still deeply shaken by the horrible lies that were reported about me during this process.

"Most of all, I'm disappointed that so many people were so quick to judge without knowing the facts, based solely on the word of an embittered ex trying to bypass due process and have me 'canceled'.

"That it may have succeeded, even partially, is shameful.

"However, now that the legal case has ended, I'm determined to move forward and focus both on my creative projects and restoring my good name."

Roiland's attorney, T Edward Welbourn, added in a separate statement to Variety: “I commend the Orange County district attorney’s office for conducting a thorough review of the facts and deciding to dismiss the case against Justin.

"I’m thankful justice has prevailed."
