Gerard Pique's 'incredible levels of pettiness' following Shakira split

People are flooding to social media conflicted over Barcelona star Gerard Piqué's response to Shakira's diss track.

People are flooding to social media conflicted over former Barcelona star Gerard Piqué's response to Shakira's diss track.

Prepare to see what's been called a whole new 'level of pettiness':

Earlier this year, in June 2022, Shakira publicly announced her split from husband of over 10 years, World Cup-winner Gerard Piqué.

While the statement didn't elude to the reasons behind the break-up, fans believed the 'Waka Waka' singer hinted there was trouble brewing in her song 'Te Felicito' with Rauw Alejandro.

Shakira has since addressed the split the best way musicians know how - a diss track - the video of which has gone on to break Latin YouTube viewing records, having been watched more than 63 million times in 24 hours as per the BBC.

And wait until you see how Piqué's responded.

In the track, titled 'Out of Your League' - the video posted on YouTube under 'SHAKIRA || BZRP Music Sessions #53' - Shakira appears to sing about an ex's new partner who is their twenties.

One of the verses of the song reads, as per Mundo Deportivo: "Zero grudge baby, I wish you good luck with my supposed replacement, I don’t even know what happened to you. You’re so weird I can’t even recognize you. I’m worth two of 22 [year old].

"You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo. You traded a Rolex for a Casio. You’re going fast, slow down. Lots of time at the gym, but your brain needs a little work too."

Piqué has since been spotted indeed driving a Renault Twingo car as well as flashing a Casio watch, while promoting his new 'Kings League' project.

In a Twitch stream as per AS, the footballer said: "I have closed an agreement with Renault so that on Sunday (this January 15) I drive a Twingo, with the clown next to me. Can’t I close personal agreements and arrive as I want?"

He also addressed his wearing of a Casio watch: "We [Kings League] reached an agreement with Casio in the Kings League to sponsor us. Casio is a great watch, it lasts a lifetime."

Twitter account, 'Football Tweet' - the 'home of football discussion' - has since taken to the platform to write: "Shakira's latest song lyrics: 'You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo. You traded a Rolex for a Casio...' Gerard Piqué now wears a casio and drives a Twingo. The level of pettiness from him is incredible."

People have flooded to the post to weigh in on Piqué's 'level of pettiness'.

One user wrote: "Petty AF."

"He is shameless," another said.

A third commented: "He was a clown as a footballer and now he is clown as a person."

Piqué's response to the song has left fans divided.

However, others have defended the footballer.

"Pettier than writing, producing and distributing a song about it?" one questioned.

Another added: "How is that being petty? Shakira can say u don't deserve me i am well above your league is nothing but Gerrard responding to it is petty?"

A final simply resolved: "They're trolling each other. It's what couples do."
