Driver tried to switch seats with his dog to avoid drunk driving arrest

Driver tried to switch seats with his dog to avoid drunk driving arrest

Police in Springfield, Colorado pulled the man over for speeding, but he tried to evade their attention by switching with his dog

A man in the USA was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, but police say he tried to switch places with his dog in order to avoid taking the rap for it.

The bizarre incident took place in Springfield, Colorado on 13 May, and saw the police pull the bloke over for speeding, before he tried to swap around with his dog and claim he wasn't driving.

The police also said in a Facebook post that once they’d got him to the side of the road he started to show ‘clear signs of intoxication’ and ran away when asked about his alcohol consumption.

It’s worth pointing out here that the investigation is ongoing, and as Springfield Police put it: “All parties involved are innocent until proven guilty.”

Also, driving under the influence of alcohol is very wrong as well.

Please don’t do that, people.

Oh, and if you get busted for it, have the gumption to take the punishment yourself, rather than expecting the police to suddenly believe that the dog was to blame.

Anyway, let’s get into the story.

The police Facebook post explained: “On 05/13/23 around 1130 pm Springfield Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling at 52 miles per hour in a posted 30 mile per hour zone near 7th and Main St.

“The driver attempted to switch places with his dog who was in the passenger seat, as the SPD [Springfield Police Department] officer approached and watched the entire process.

“The male party then exited the passenger side of the vehicle and claimed he was not driving.

“The male party showed clear signs of intoxication and when asked about his alcohol consumption the male party ran from the Officer.”

It’s interesting that this town is called Springfield, as it definitely sounds like something out of The Simpsons.

After a daring escape bid, the man didn’t get very far.

The police continued: “The male party was apprehended quickly within about 20 yards of the vehicle.

“It was discovered that the male was driving from Las Animas to Pueblo and got lost in Springfield.

“The male party was also found to have two active warrants for his arrest out of Pueblo.”

Uh-oh, that’s not going to look good either.

“The male party was medically cleared at the hospital and then booked into the Baca County Jail for his warrants and also charged with; Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, Driving while ability impaired, driving under suspension, speeding 20-24 over, and resisting arrest,” the police added.

Now, you’re probably thinking - what happened to the poor dog?

Don’t worry, it was fine.

The police confirmed: “The dog was given to an acquaintance of the driver to take care of while the party was in jail.

“The dog does not face any charges and was let go with just a warning.”

A warning?

Sounds like woof justice, that.
