Girlfriend of British rugby player who was killed in Vegas stag do raises almost £40,000 to bring him home

His girlfriend set up a fundraiser following his tragic death

A fundraiser to bring home the body of former British rugby player Chris Moran - who was killed on a stag do in Las Vegas - has hit almost £40,000.

Moran - known as Tangy by his loved ones - was killed on 9 June after being struck by a lorry while attempting to cross a road.

Despite attempts to save him, police said the 32-year-old, from Wakefield in West Yorkshire, tragically died at the scene.

Moran, who played rugby league for amateur team Westgate Common, had been chatting on the phone to his girlfriend Georgia Cooke, 25, just minutes before his death.

She told the Mirror: “We’d been speaking up until 10 minutes before – he was saying how amazing Vegas was and that he wanted to bring me there.

“He was having the best time and we were so excited for our future together. We had just secured a mortgage for our first home and had plans to get married and have kids.”

Georgia, who is a residential worker for children with special needs, said: “I had a call from one of Chris’s friends around 8pm to say what had happened. I couldn’t speak and refused to believe it.

“I don’t know what I am going to do without him – he brought me so much happiness.”

She added: “He was the kindest person in the world – he would do anything to help anyone.

“You couldn’t meet a more selfless, caring person. He did loads for his friends and family and adored his niece.

“He played rugby every weekend, which he really enjoyed, and was very passionate about his business.”

Following his death, Cooke launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the cost of returning his body to the UK.

On the fundraising page, she wrote: “Our Chris went away on a stag do to vegas and was involved in a tragic accident and sadly passed away. We are doing everything we can to bring him home to his family.

"Any other proceeds will go to family. Thank you in advance.”

The fundraiser’s target was set at £35,000 and donations have almost topped £40,000, with the current amount standing at £39,285 (at the time of writing).

It’s also been flooded with messages of condolence and support for Moran’s family and friends.

Cooke said: “He’d be amazed. I don’t think he would be able to believe it. He was so, so loved by everyone and I hope he knew that.”

A spokesman for the Foreign Office added: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Las Vegas and are in touch with the local authorities.”
