Brits all thinking the same thing as it’s announced ‘pints’ of wine will be sold in UK for first time ever

The news has broke that pints of wine will be sold in the UK for the first time ever and it's all anyone's talking about.

Your mum's already getting rid of her long stemmed glasses in favour of a pint pot which perfectly fits her pinot in, even though it might be a bit premature.

So cling on to your favourite goblets extra tight this festive season, as they might not be around next year.

That's because Brits will soon be able to enjoy the ideal amount of vino instead of having to buy multiple mini bottles or being over faced by a full size one - and people are buzzing that they'll be more choice in the supermarket aisles.

New freedoms granted from leaving the European Union mean that the new ‘pint’ size wine is about to hit the shelves in UK shops for the first time ever in 2024.

900 British vineyards are going to benefit from this act which will see still and sparkling wine to be sold in measurements such as 200ml, 500ml and 568ml pint sizes in shops, bars and restaurants across the nation, according to the government.

Brits are over the moon with the news - especially because it gives them the perfect opportunity to utilise an old meme.

It comes after the Department for Business and Trade announced today (27 December) that the new measurement system would offer more flexibility and choice for customers.

The reforms are said to ‘reduce burdensome regulations’ on alcoholic beverages as part of the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Act 2023, which will increase business freedoms to sell alcohol in different manners.

Responding to the development, social media users flooded the internet with comments wondering if we will be able to get our hands on a 'mega pint', which might ring a few bells for some people.

One wrote: "Can you get a mega pint?"

Another said: "Is it a mega pint?"

A third wrote: "Does it come in the form of mega pints as well?"

And a fourth added: "What about a mega pint?"

If you cast your mind back a bit, you may recall that Johnny Depp was asked whether he had poured himself 'a mega pint of red wine' while on the stand as he faced off with ex-wife Amber Heard during their dual defamation trial.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star responded: "A mega pint? I poured myself a large glass of wine, I thought it necessary."

The terminology used to describe the size of his alcoholic beverage managed to amuse a lot of people when the clip went viral, so obviously it became a prime candidate for a meme.

As well, people were just super curious about what constitutes a mega pint in terms of the volume of liquid - which is a valid question, especially since pints of wine are landing in the UK soon and we want to know if they're mega or not.

Well, one English winemaker who asked not to be named, told the Guardian the introduction of pints of wine was a colossal waste time.

They said: "No one is going to make a pint-sized bottle. In order to make a pint-sized bottle you’re going to have to invest a huge amount of money. It’s a silly measure."

So the mega pints may not be as easy to come by as you'd hope.
