The Australian music news you need to be across for November

The Australian music news you need to be across for November

It's getting hot, but the Aussie music news is getting hotter.

A whole lot has been going on in the Australian music scene lately.

Between Aussie favourites dropping studio albums, going on headline tours, and even some juicy beef, there’s so much you need to know.

We’re heading into the energy-fuelled season, so whether you want to see your favourite international artist or find that next soundtrack for your summer, we’ve got you covered below.

Winston Surfshirt drop most collaborative album yet

Sydney soul six-piece Winston Surfshirt are bringing the heat and releasing their highly anticipated third album Panna Cotta.

Coming out on November 11, it’s been a long time in the making and will drop almost three years since their second studio LP.

They’ve been slowly but surely dropping hit after hit, and we’ve been lapping up all the energy from singles such ‘All Of The Little Things’, ‘Complicated’ and ‘There’s Only One’.

And there’s certainly been a collaborative theme emerging across the already-released singles.

The band is keeping it fresh and the team has joined forces with the likes of Genesis Owusu, Young Franco, and Milan Ring, in what has been a deliberate attempt to expand their sound and horizons.

As frontman Winston explains: “I always wanted to work with other artists on records for our own stuff and from the get-go had the idea that the next album would be full of collaborations, every song would have a feature, so started pulling bits together with that intention.”

We’ll be popping this one on repeat when given AUX duty.

Australia is the destination of the summer

As soon as it gets hotter, the headline acts want to roll on through.

Can you feel it? It’s in the Australian summer air.

The country surely seems like the place to be in November, because we are being treated to tours galore from pop icons, to dance legends, to soul groovers.

Three-time Grammy Award winner Dua Lipa brings her refreshing disco-pop sound to our shores for multiple dates in what will be a can’t-miss show.

Sam Fender will be bringing Seventeen Going Under down under in November as well.

The Geordie singer has been putting out absolute bangers and has gained a strong Australian fan base while doing it.

As mentioned in our previous guides, the man of the moment, Steve Lacy, will be playing multiple dates and will headline Spilt Milk when he’s out in the Australian summer sun.

British dance powerhouse Groove Armada will be providing all the energy and nostalgic hits when they return to Australia for the first time in 13 years.

Meanwhile, the ever-smooth Channel Tres will be bringing his house beats and laidback vocals across the country as well.

So much to look forward to!

The 1975 beef with triple j

In more juicy news, British rockers The 1975 have been beefing with the one and only triple j.

Frontman Matty Healy absolutely went to town on the radio station for apparently not supporting their recent album Being Funny In A Foreign Language.

The youth station announced the band would be coming to Australia to tour their album, and, well, Healy told them to not so kindly go do one.

He initially said on Instagram: “Play our music then before you start licking our a**e just cause you’ve realised we’re mint.”

He then doubled down on Twitter: “You literally have nothing to do with us coming to Australia, don’t start getting involved now.

"You don’t have a monopoly on cool and the head of your company is a k**bhead so you’s can f**k off.”

Yikes.

Mallrat calls out the ARIAs

The nominations for the 2022 ARIAs recently dropped and it's fair to say singer-songwriter Mallrat wasn’t too happy with the lack of diversity.

She took to Instagram to call out the awards, saying: “F**k the ARIAs, when I looked at the list of nominees this morning my initial reaction was to feel personally underestimated and misunderstood by my album being snubbed.

“Then I took a deep breath, then I realised it’s not about me. Approximately ⅕ of the nominees are non-male. In categories like heavy rock there are no non-male artists at all.

“So I’m again reminded that the Australian music industry like many industries is dominated by men and in this case men who don’t think an artist is credible unless it's a nonchalant dude playing guitar/rock music. F**k you guys you don’t get it.”

Mallrat released her commercially successful album Butterfly Blue earlier this year, which reached number two on the ARIA Australian Album charts and for all intents and purposes was a banger of an album.

ARIA responded to her claims by agreeing that females were under-represented, however, claimed that it was a reflection of how Aussies engaged with music.

In a statement to triple J, CEO of ARIA, Annabelle Herd, said: “It's our mission to create opportunities for Australian music to be heard by all who create it, if we are not getting enough success for female artists or non-binary artists we need to tackle that at the source.

"The awards and the charts are reflections of the music released in a year and how Australians engage with it, that's why we are lobbying at a government and industry level for overall systemic change and representation."

Flume’s tour gets even bigger

The leading Australian producer is finally making his way back home for a series of tour dates and a cheeky energetic festival set at Spilt Milk to sink a few cold ones too.

The tour is coming in support of his latest album Palaces and, luckily enough, the demand was so high that he’s added additional performances in Perth and Melbourne.

You’ve got to love it.

He’ll be joined by some huge names and collaborators in MAY-A, Vera Blue, Toro y Moi, and the aforementioned Channel Tres.

The headline run will be a welcomed return for the dance legend.
