The first series of The Sandman only landed on Netflix a few days ago, but fans are already wondering whether a second series is in the works.
The Sandman follows the story of Morpheus, the king of dreams and one of the seven Endless, is captured in an occult ritual in 1916. Morpheus escapes after 106 years imprisonment and sets out to restore order to his realm, The Dreaming.
The series spent time in development hell for years, with the first attempt to adapt it for screen happening all the way back in 1991. But due to the show’s success, fans are hoping there would be far less than that to wait for a second installment.

Will there be a Season 2 of Sandman on Netflix?
Netflix hasn’t officially renewed The Sandman for a second series yet but there’s hope that the show will be back for a second journey into Morpheus’ world. There’s certainly enough content to make up a second series, or more, as Neil Gaiman wrote 75 issues of the original Sandman comics.
However, producer David S. Goyer has since said that writing for the second season is already underway, so although the series hasn’t officially been confirmed, it should be able to head to filming fairly quickly if it gets the green light from Netflix.
When is Sandman Season 2 coming out?
Although the show was technically in development for almost thirty years, once things finally got going, the first season of The Sandman took almost two years to produce, with filming getting underway in October 2020 and the finished project finally landing on Netflix in August 2022.

If the second series follows a similar timing, bearing in mind that the first time around it was being created during the pandemic, we could be looking at a production cycle of 18-24 months, which would give a release date of sometime around spring or summer 2024.
Who is in the cast of Sandman Season 2?
The Sandman comics are full of an array of characters which sees numerous characters come and go, but author Neil Gaiman has assured fans that if the series makes it to season two, you’ll see all your favourites return - as well as some fresh faces.
"Part of the fun of Sandman is, if we get to season 2, you're going to meet a whole lot more people," he said in an interview with Radio Times. "And by the way, in season 2, you're also going to re-encounter pretty much everybody that you knew and loved in season 1."

Gaiman continued: "Hob Gadling is there in Season of Mists [the fourth collection in The Sandman comic book series]. Desire is waiting for us, as well. The people that you love will all come back and there are lots of people that you haven't met yet to fall in love with."
Among those expected to reprise their roles in season two are:
- Tom Sturridge as Morpheus / King of Dreams
- Kirby Howell-Baptist as Dream’s sister Death of the Endless
- Patton Oswalt as the voice of Matthew the Raven, Dream's emissary
- Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar, the ruler of Hell
- Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian
- Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, the occult detective
What could be in the plot for The Sandman series 2?
With plenty of loose ends from the first series, there’s plenty to delve into in future series. It’s thought that the next season of the show would primarily focus on the fourth and fifth volumes of the graphic novel, titled Season of Mists and A Game of You respectively.

The first of these sees Dream return to Hell, where Lucifer Morningstar is waiting for him, unleashing chaos by abdicating her throne and starting a new life on Earth – freeing her demons in the process.
The second focuses on a supporting character from season 1, Barbie (as played by Lily Travers), who makes a long-overdue return to her fantasy world in the Dreaming following an intervention from mythical steed Martin Tenbones.
