Sam Smith has divided viewers after correcting BBC co-host Alex Jones for calling them a 'fisherman', rather than a 'fisher-them'.

The non-binary singer's recent appearance on The One Show has gone viral after they were misgendered.

When asked about a secret fishing hobby, the 30-year-old - who uses pronouns they/them - said they would like to become a 'fisher-them'.
Host Ronan Keating asked Smith: "You're a big fan of fishing?"
They replied: "I do love fishing, yes! Yeah, I'd love to be a fisher-them."
Jones then asked: "What, like a fly fisherman?"

The singer then corrected her, in a non-rude way, by saying: "I'd be any type of fisher-them.
"I think I would like to, one day, I'd just like to end my days fishing.
"Like sitting on a bank."
They added: "I do it on the sea and I do it on lakes. I've never done it alone, someone's almost taught me."

Commenting on the clip, Piers Morgan, said that the singer 'needs to shut up'.
However, other viewers came to Smith's defence and told Morgan: "The fact that this bothers you so much says more about you than it does about Sam Smith."
A second person added: "True that man, I didn’t hear anything wrong with what they said at all! I love fishing too!"
A third said: "I think it makes sense… fisherman / fisherwoman / fisherthem…"

The singer has recently addressed their raunchy new music video amid public backlash.
In case you’ve not yet seen it, the 'Unholy' singer caused a bit of a stir with the video for their latest track 'I'm Not Here to Make Friends'.
The video, which showcases Smith in a variety of revealing outfits, such as scantily clad dancers wearing corsets and suspenders, has sparked a debate about age restrictions on music videos.

Speaking about the song - and its headline grabbing video - on The Graham Norton Show, Smith revealed that the inspiration for the track actually came from a date, explaining: “I went on a date with this guy and he just… people friend-zone me a lot on dates.
“And the next day I went into the studio and I was, like, I’m sick of, like, I’ve got enough friends. I don’t need any more friends.”
Smith added: “Basically it’s set in a castle. It’s like Henry VIII’s castle.”
They also reassured viewers that: “Nothing seedy went on, guys. It wasn’t weird.”
