Prince Harry speaks about the only time he cried over the death of Princess Diana

Prince Harry speaks about the only time he cried over the death of Princess Diana

"Everyone knows where they were and what they were doing the night my mother died"

Prince Harry has opened up about the death of Princess Diana, saying he only cried one time as he grieved the shocking loss.

Harry was just 12 years old when his mum passed away from injuries she sustained in a car crash at the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris, France.

Diana, along with her partner, Dodi Fayed, and their chauffeur Henri Paul were killed in the collision.

The Duke of Sussex opened up about the grieving process in his highly anticipated interview on ITV, which is set to air tomorrow (8 January).

He also spoke to reporter Tom Bradby about the crowds that gathered outside Kensington Palace, and how it was difficult for him to show emotion at that time.

"Everyone knows where they were and what they were doing the night my mother died," he said.

"I cried once, at the burial, and you know I go into detail about how strange it was and how actually there was some guilt that I felt and I think William felt as well, by walking around the outside of Kensington Palace.

"There were 50,000 bouquets of flowers to our mother, and there we were shaking people's hands, smiling.

"I've seen the videos, right, I looked back over it all.

"And the wet hands that we were shaking, we couldn't understand why their hands were wet, but it was all the tears that they were wiping away.

"Everyone thought and felt like they knew our mum, and the two closest people to her, the two most loved people by her, were unable to show any emotion in that moment."

This is one of many topics set to be covered in Prince Harry: The Interview, with Bradby set to question Harry's decision to discuss his relationships with other royal family members in his upcoming autobiography Spare.

The Guardian was able to get a sneak peek ahead of the book's launch on 10 January, revealing the shocking claim that William physically attacked his brother during an argument about Meghan Markle.

The alleged confrontation occurred in 2019 at Harry's London home after William apparently called Meghan 'difficult', 'rude' and 'abrasive'.

The Duke of Sussex says he slammed William for 'parrot[ing] the press narrative' that had been building against his wife, leading to a shouting match.

He wrote that William said he was only trying to help, to which he replied: "Are you serious? Help me? Sorry – is that what you call this? Helping me?”

The pair moved into the kitchen where Harry reportedly gave his brother a drink of water and said he can't speak to him when he's angry.

"He set down the water, called me another name, then came at me," he wrote.

"It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor.

"I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out."

Elsewhere in the upcoming ITV interview, Prince Harry expressed how desperate he is to mend ties with his family, saying: "I would like to get my father back, I would like to have my brother back."
