Netflix drops first trailer for drug cartel series Griselda starring Sofia Vergara

People are flooding to social media in excitement over the trailer for an upcoming Netflix series starring Sofía Vergara.

The 51-year-old actor - known for her iconic role as Gloria in Modern Family - stars in upcoming limited series Griselda.

The first look at Vergara as 'the savvy and ambitious Colombian businesswoman Griselda Blanco' - a drug lord who created 'one of the most profitable cartels in history' - has been revealed by Netflix after the platform shared the series' trailer to social media.

The trailer hooks viewers right from the get go, Vergara's voiceover ominously setting up the series - her character speaking to her distributors about her 'product'.

"We can make a lot of money together," she says, before one of the distributors asks: "Who is the one in charge?"

The answer to his question? Well, the shot then flips to Vergara who's delivering a cold, hardened and spine-chilling stare, and then it cuts to the series' title, Griselda.

Griselda Blanco - a.k.a. the Black Widow or Cocaine Godmother - entered the drug trade in 1964 when she moved to the US with her four children and husband and established her cocaine business.

Frequently travelling from Colombia to escape authorities before returning to the US, alongside changing passports and identities, Blanco maintained her drug empire, making a whopping $80 million per month and becoming tied up in the Miami Drug War of the 70s to 80s.

In its own words, the DEA describes Blanco as having 'loved killings,' with bodies having 'lined the streets of Miami' as a result of her 'feuds,' whether she killed 'rivals' or 'wayward lovers' or was simply 'cancelling debts she didn't want to pay'.

People are flocking to social media in anticipation of Vergara taking on the role - Blanco having previously been played by a whole host of actors including Catherine Zeta-Jones in The Cocaine Godmother and Jennifer Lopez also taking on the character in upcoming Hollywood biopic The Godmother.

One YouTube user said: "Finally! Sofia getting to play a dramatic role."

"As a huge fan of queen of the south and Sofia Vergara i'm very excited for this," another added.

A third wrote: "Gonna watch it for Sofia."

Griselda is currently set for release on Netflix on 25 January 2024.
