Netflix fans 'can’t wait' for most expensive movie of the year to drop

Netflix fans 'can’t wait' for most expensive movie of the year to drop

Zack Snyder's latest project will land on the streaming service on 22 December

After what feels like months of anticipation, Netflix is about to drop what will be the most expensive movie of 2023.

In fact, the streaming service is set to release a whole load of brand new content in the coming weeks, just in time to get us through the festive season.

Along with the second installment of The Crown's final season, and the eagerly-awaited Chicken Run sequel, is one of the most widely-discussed movie releases of the 21st century.

The movie in question is DC legend Zack Synder's latest project, Rebel Moon.

This action-packed extravaganza has kept film buffs on their toes since it was announced in February last year - especially after it was revealed that the storyline would be so colossal and the budget so high, that they'd be chopping it into two parts.

Vanity Fair claimed earlier this year that the incoming hit is estimated to have cost a whopping $166 million (£130 million) to make.

And it's no wonder, when you consider the HUGE Hollywood names set to star in the soon-to-be Netflix No. 1, including Hannibal Lector icon Anthony Hopkins, The Gentleman star Charlie Hunam and Kingsman villainess Sofia Boutelle.

As well as the sell-out cast, however, Snyder - the genius behind the likes of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League - is understood to have dropped a huge portion of his budget on design.

Instead of relying on the likes of advanced technology and special effects to bring their otherworldly spaces to life, the director chose to create practical sets in a Santa Clarita canyon just outside Los Angeles.

Amongst the intricately-detailed complexes built by the crew was a Scandinavian-style village, which was complete with homes, shops and barns, as well as a stone bridge and even an entire river.

As mentioned, the complex plot line also had a part to play in the staggering spending budget.

The first installment, titled Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire, focuses on a peaceful settlement located on the edge of a distant moon - which finds itself threatened by a tyrannical ruler.

As the conflict comes to a head, 'a mysterious stranger living among its villagers becomes their best hope for survival'.

Snyder's wife and long-time producing partner Deborah previously explained that the film was originally supposed to be in one part, 'but it was in Zack form'.

"It was 172 pages," she said, and was shaping up to be three hours long, which worried Netflix film chairman, Scott Stuber.

The sci-fi epic has been split into two parts, the first of which will be released later this month.

“Stuber was like, ‘On the service, under-two-hour movies really do better for some reason,’ even though you’ll binge-watch a series of eight episodes,” Deborah explained.

“Zack said, ‘If you ask me to make this less than two hours, I’m going to lose all the character. You won’t care about these people. It’s a character story about how people can change, and redemption, and what are you willing to fight for…’

"So he said, ‘What if I give you two movies?’"

And it appears to be a case of double the movie, double the excitement from fans - many of whom have been unable to reign in their joy that the movie will be landing on 22 December.

Tweeting a GIF from the movie, one soon-to-be viewer wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): "It's #RebelMoon month ya'll [flame emojis]."

A third delighted fan added: "FINALLY! The month of #RebelMoon has arrived. My most anticipated movie of the year."

"Can't wait to see this!" another wrote on Facebook.
