Netflix announces new series of Black Mirror to be released in June

Netflix announces new series of Black Mirror to be released in June

The hit show will be back for a sixth season

Netflix has shared the first trailer for Black Mirror season six.

The dark, sci-fi anthology series teased the return on Twitter yesterday, with a post from the official account asking: “What have we missed?”

Given that the last series dropped all the way back in 2019 - quite a lot, actually.

Thankfully, after a four-year hiatus, Black Mirror is returning for a sixth season and personally, I’m pretty excited.

Today (26 April), they released the first teaser for a new set of episodes, telling fans 'you're due an update' along with their Black Mirror teasers, announcing that season six would be landing in June.

The cast is set to include the likes of famous faces such as Aaron Paul, Anjana Vasan, Annie Murphy, Salma Hayek Pinault and many more.

New episodes of Black Mirror aren't very far away.

While not much isn't known about the upcoming episodes, they've been teased to be 'the most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected yet'.

The show, which is often set in a dystopian near-future, was created by writer and satirist Charlie Brooker and has featured a slew of high profile actors over the years, including Anthony Mackie, Miley Cyrus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jon Hamm, Jesse Plemons, Damson Idris and Andrew Scott.

It first aired back in 2011 on Channel 4 with a three-episode season. A second season, which also consisted of three episodes aired in 2013 and was followed by the 2014 Christmas special titled White Christmas.

It was then snapped up by Netflix, which released the six-episode seasons three and four, as well as the interactive movie Bandersnatch, starring Fionn Whitehead and Will Poulter.

A three-episode fifth season was released in June 2019, leaving fans clamouring for more.

A sixth season was rumoured to be in the works last May, with Josh Hartnett, Aaron Paul, Kate Mara and Rory Culkin all reported to be taking part.

In December last year, Paul and Mara were spotted filming the show in Rye, East Sussex.

Variety has previously reported that to a source close to production on the sixth season said it was ‘even more cinematic in scope, with each instalment being treated as an individual film’.

Fans have been waiting since 2019 for a new season of Black Mirror.

Hopes of a new series were somewhat dashed back in 2020 when Brooker questioned whether the world was interested in seeing more episodes of the dystopian show.

"I've been busy, doing things. I don't know what I can say about what I'm doing and not doing," he explained in the interview with the Radio Times.

"At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those.

"I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”

But given that we were in the midst of a global pandemic at that point, I guess Brooker just thought we all had enough on our plates.

Black Mirror season six will be available to stream on Netflix in June, 2023.
