First look at new Luther film has been released

He's back

The first look at the brand new Luther film is here - and you'll be pleased to know the coat is back.

The long-running crime series is getting its very own movie and we've finally got our first shots of how it's going to look.

The new shots, which were shared with Empire, show Luther (played by Idris Elba) and his trusty Paul Smith coat striding across some snow-covered mountains.

In another shot he appears to be inside a train tunnel and can be seen staring off into the distance with a determined look on his face.

The movie is set to see Detective John Luther leave his usual London backdrop and go further afield - as yet, we’re not sure exactly where that is, but from the photos at least one location has plenty of snow.

Talking to Empire, Elba said: “We really peel the onion back here because we had the time and scale to do that.

“It also gives Neil [Cross, Luther’s creator] a lot more, you know, Luther-land to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he goes, what the landscape is.

“We break out of the gritty streets of London, we take it outside of that a little bit. And that’s great. It feels like now we’re entering a different life of the Luther experience.”

“It’s really dangerous when expanding from television to film to throw a lot of money at it, and for that moment to change the characteristics of the show,” he told the publication.

“I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, [we don’t] distort the parameters of Luther-land too much. We do amplify the action and do amplify the stakes. But [season three’s] man-under-the-bed moment? That don’t cost you much money. Those moments are still intact.” Yeah, he’s not wrong there, I still have nightmares about that bloke under the bed and don’t get me started on that bus scene from last season.

Back in September, Elba told LADbible that the movie was very nearly finished.

He said: "The Luther film, guess what, we have finished it and we have some finishing work to do on the movie but it's nearly there.

"We're really proud of it."

The movie is set to be released in March next year - so not too long until we're reunited with our favourite detective (and his coat).
