The Wheel viewers stunned after blind contestant wins £45,000 on art question

The Wheel viewers stunned after blind contestant wins £45,000 on art question

A blind contestant delighted and surprised viewers by bagging £45k on a question about art

Viewers of The Wheel were left in floods of tears after a blind contestant bagged £45,000.

He won the eye watering prize after correctly answering an art question.

Throughout the show, Toby made himself a firm favourite with viewers, as he made playful jokes at his own expense.

Toby was appearing as a contestant on The Wheel when he bagged the prize money.

The student, who told host Michael McIntyre that he is 96 percent blind, eventually made it to the last round of the game.

At the nail-biting conclusion, Toby was given the final question by McIntyre: "Which of these artists has won the Turner Prize in the 21st century?"

The options given to him were Grayson Perry, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, and Anish Kapoor.

Uncertain of who to choose, Toby turned to DJ Sara Cox - one of the famous faces on hand to assist contestants - for advice.

Toby said: "It's all on you this one. I have no idea.

"Blind people don't like art."

Sara Cox was selected by Toby to advise him on how to answer the question.

No doubt feeling the pressure, Cox encouraged Toby to go with Grayson Perry as his answer.

Fortunately, Cox had guided him correctly and he was left lost for words when he won the prize cash.

Whilst hugging a tearful Cox, Toby vowed to listen to the DJ's BBC Radio 2 'every day'.

And the irony that a blind contestant would win the game on an art based question wasn't lost on McIntyre.

He said: "I can't believe you have come on this wheel, you are a blind man, you have been given a question on art to win the show, you have hilariously pointed out, during the question, not a big fan of art, never actually seen it!"

In response, Toby joked: "I tell you what, love art now! It's my favourite."

Toby was overjoyed when he managed to bag the £45k prize - despite not being able to see art.

Toby's condition means that he can see light, but can't make out people.

He became visually impaired as a result of a genetic condition which worsened with age, before leaving him blind at the age of sixteen.

Viewers were delighted for Toby and took to social media to applaud his success.

One viewer said: 'HE'S DONE IT!!!!! Toby has absolutely dominated tonight!!!! A well deserved £45k win!!!! #TheWheel."

Another proud viewer said: "Don't think I've ever been happier with a winner than I am with Toby #TheWheel."

And a fellow viewer added: "Wow #thewheel what a show. So pleased for that guy, tear in my eye. I've always liked @sarajcox and now I like her even more."
