Tom Hardy series Taboo gets surprise update six years after it aired on BBC

Taboo starring Tom Hardy was last seen on screens around six years ago, but now a second season could be on the way

Years after the first series finished, there has been a surprise update on Tom Hardy’s show Taboo.

Here’s a reminder of the first series, in case you have - quite understandably - forgotten what it was all about:

The show was set during the early 19th century and starred Tom Hardy as the elusive James Keziah Delaney, who spent his time grunting and hobbling around a smoky historical London after spending 12 years in the African wilderness.

It featured star turns from actors such as Jonathan Pryce, Oona Chaplin, Jessie Buckley, and Stephen Graham, and while some people said it was too dark - the screen, not the subject matter - and others suggest that not much actually went on, there were still loud calls for a second season.

Obviously, when you’ve got a cast like that, and you’re relying on the schedules of people like Hardy and his co-creator Stephen Knight - of Peaky Blinders fame - it’s hard to get everyone together at the drop of a hat.

So it had proven, until now.

While it had been renewed for a second season, little has been heard about Taboo for a good while now.

However, Hardy’s production partner Dean Baker has now cleared things up in an interview with the Radio Times.

Baker said: “Currently we are working on a second season of Taboo.”

So, if that’s true, what can we expect to see from James Delaney and co?

Well, Hardy has previously spoken about his ideas for the next season, and they’re a bit out-there to say the least.

Back in 2021, he said: “In my head I was thinking, ‘Let’s say they get to America, they get to Canada, fast-forward to 1968, the Tet Offensive, the Vietnam War, look at the CIA, the Viet Cong, the French in Saigon.

“Take the Delaney family tree out in the jungle, and recreate the same family dynamics that were happening in London but with new people, thinking about how history and corruption repeats itself.

“It’s still Taboo, it’s still period, but it’s the Sixties.

“There’s something fun about that.”

They can set it whenever they want, as long as this hat stays.

Knight himself has said that the second season is pretty much written - working with Hardy and his dad, Chips - but the scheduling has been the hold-up until now.

Perhaps those problems have now been resolved, and everyone can finally get together and make the show, which Hardy said is ‘very important’ to him.

Will it take place in the 20th century, or will it flash back to the past?

With Taboo, we can never be too sure that we’ll actually find out, but rest assured - we’ll tell you as soon as we hear.
